Indications and uses

• Treatment of a serious infection caused by organisms demonstrated to be susceptible to the complete meropenem–sulbactam combination.
• Culture-directed treatment of a beta-lactamase-producing bacterial infection when the beta-lactamase inhibitor is clinically required.
• Treatment of a serious mixed bacterial infection only when both meropenem and sulbactam are justified by microbiology or local susceptibility data.
• Specialist treatment of a susceptible resistant Gram-negative infection, including susceptible Acinetobacter infection, where locally authorised.
• Reserve use under an antimicrobial-stewardship programme after review of culture results, renal function and the current manufacturer-approved indication.
